The Football Association Challenge Cup, commonly known as the FA Cup, is the oldest national football competition in the world, having been first held in the 1871–72 season. Organized by The Football Association (The FA), it is an annual knockout tournament open to all eligible professional and amateur clubs down to level 9 of the English football league system. Due to this wide entry, the tournament is famous for its "magic," allowing lower-tier teams to compete against Premier League giants, often resulting in "giant-killing" upsets that create lasting, romanticized moments in football history.
The competition structure consists of 12 rounds, followed by semi-finals and the final, typically played at Wembley Stadium in London. While non-league teams begin in the early qualifying rounds, professional teams from League One and Two join in the first round proper, and Premier League and Championship clubs enter at the third round in January. Replays were historically used for drawn matches, but starting in the 2024–25 season, replays were scrapped from the first round onwards to accommodate an expanded European match schedule.
As of 2025, Arsenal holds the record for the most successful club with 14 titles, closely followed by Manchester United, while Crystal Palace are the 2025 winners. Winning the FA Cup is highly prestigious, offering a place in the UEFA Europa League (or Conference League) and the FA Community Shield. Despite the rise of the Premier League and Champions League, the FA Cup remains a cherished, historic trophy that symbolizes the, at times, unexpected, and truly competitive nature of English football.

The FA Cup, founded in 1871–72 as the world's oldest football tournament, is a historic knockout competition open to all levels of English football. It evolved from an elite amateur event into a prestigious, professional-dominated tournament, with Arsenal holding a record 14 wins. Known for "giant killings," the final is a staple of English culture, famously held at Wembley.
The inaugural tournament was held in 1871–72, with Wanderers beating Royal Engineers in the first final at Kennington Oval, London. It was established by C.W. Alcock to encourage competition among Football Association clubs. The tournament was originally dominated by southern amateur teams, but by the 1880s, professional sides from the north began to take control.
The competition moved to its iconic venue, Wembley Stadium, in 1923, marked by the famous "White Horse Final". Over the decades, it has hosted memorable moments like the 1953 "Matthews Final" and numerous giant-killings, where lower-league teams defeat top-tier opponents. It was briefly held at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff (2001–2006) during the redevelopment of Wembley.
Modern era changes include the introduction of penalty shootouts to settle draws, replacing the traditional, multiple-replay system. Arsenal holds the record for the most wins with 14, followed by Manchester United. The competition continues to be highly regarded, with winners earning a spot in the UEFA Europa League and the Community Shield.
